The cap of General Charles Pearre
Cabell was obtained from a vendor at the Bay Area Militaria Collector’s Show
and Sale in Hayward, California. The cap is a nice example of an early USAF
shade 84 and is dated March 1, 1960. The cap was produced by Luxenberg Military
and Civilian Tailors of New York and has a rear cap band with cap band hook for
extra stability while worn. The cap eagle is the familiar Luxenberg style and
is hallmarked “Luxenberg New York made in England.”
The cap eagle was probably used by
the general on an earlier dated cap. By 1960, the Luxenberg style cap eagle was
no longer regulation. It was probably the personal preference of the general
but then, who is going to tell a four star general that he is not regulation.
This cap was not the general’s first cap but probably his last cap as he
retired in 1962. The general received his first star on 26 February 1944,
during World War II. When the USAF became a separate service in 1947 he was on
the path of attaining his second star on 18 October 1947. He attained his
fourth star on 11 July 1958. By 1960, the date of the cap, he was a four star
general. Note the general wearing the Luxenberg cap with Luxenberg style eagle
in his photo above.
